Mouthpiece, 2011.

A wearable involving a photoresistor hooked into an old retainer, which activates a loud tone from a nearby speaker whenever a performer’s mouth opens, rendering speech largely unintelligible. I designed this to perform an essay of personal recollections, which is a source of conflict for me in ways that probably apply to all kinds of expression: a desire to make people know and understand our own experiences conflicts with a refusal to own all of these experiences; we are frustrated with the knowledge that it's easier to say something comprehendible than it is to make someone else comprehend. I hope this project is to some extent humorous.
